A couple of work colleagues have rare and ancient coins they wanted photographs of... And I had access to a set of extension tubes but nothing to take pictures of. I think I see a solution :)

Goose Fair
I've never been to Goose Fair in 34 years, most of which have been spent in Nottingham. So this year I made a determined effort to go - naturally my main aim was photos... I've actually been twice - the first time I only had the monopod and it really shows, but I liked some of the effects so I've published them. Second time, I made sure to take the tripod, which really does make things easier!
15th Jul 2006Fairford 2006
Great day out, this one... Photoshop's auto-level has gone mad on some of these. The Red Arrows were not performing in the dark, but I liked the effect so I kept it.

Very, very hot- and the sunscreen didn't stop me looking lobster-coloured by the end of the day. Hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I enjoyed taking them.
9th May 2006Miscellaneous
Anything that doesn't fit into another collection goes here. So this one will change more than any of the others. Keep an eye on it...

Cornwall
I love Cornwall. The drive down is the start of my holiday, crossing the Tamar is the start of the last lap, and one hour before I get to see some good friends.

Normally it takes about 24 hours for me to relax. In Cornwall it takes about 20 seconds, partly due to the sense of space and the slower pace, but mostly it's down to the company.

Can't beat walking a deserted beach out of season, Sam the Dogg dashing in and out of the water, the wind howling, looking out over the ocean and thinking 'the next land that way is America'...

16th Jul 2005Fairford 2005
Another scorching day at Fairford, for RIAT 2005. We were there on the Saturday again, so we could recover on the Sunday...

I've published 201 of the 800+ photos I took on the day. Apologies for shooting so many of the Lancaster and B1 but I like them, so I'll keep doing it :)
28th Jun 2005Thunderstruck!
First attempt at lightning photos - and I'm happy with the results, considering these are all shot through windows :)
22nd Jun 2005Poppies II
Different from the last poppies collection - this one was done in the morning, rather than the evening. And it's a much more spectacular display. All taken in the same area as the other collection, but shooting in the morning has made an awfully big difference :D
13th May 2005Ruddington Flowers II
Trying out a new (to me, anyway!) technique: macro with a telephoto lens... OK, so it only focuses at 1.85m but it's a 400mm :) I like it.

28th Feb 2005S.B.D. (Small Brown Dog)
Sam the Dogg. Definitely two Gs. When I get to Cornwall, the noisiest greeting is from Sam, without a shadow of a doubt...

Apologies for the motion-blur on the indoor shots and some dreadful focus issues on some of the outdoor shots. What was that about never working with children or animals?!

28th Nov 2004When does Craft become Art?
I'm so impressed with the quality of workmanship going into these items that I thought I should give everyone the chance to see them. Regular feature at Memorabilia- try and find them, if ever you go.
16th Oct 2004London Expo
My first trip to the London Expo- first event outside Memorabilia, really... First impressions- much more space, and a lot less crowded.

In theory, that's great- I could see the guests! Photos were a possibility!

Wrong.

Lighting levels meant you had to be REALLY close to get any kind of success. Everything here was taken at 1000ISO, which is why they're so grainy. But I'll still go next year, given half a chance.

Highlights
- Ernie Hudson posing three times with the Ghostbusters
- Amber Benson charming everybody she met
- Eliza Dushku walking past the Ghostbusters saying "Wow! Check THESE guys out!" as she was leaving
-Everybody's reaction to the Ghostbusters
16th Oct 2004Famous Faces
Too many Memorabilia collections... From now on, all the stars I get pictures of will go in here- so it'll change in April, July and November every year :)

New event- London Expo. Only three shots from here; Eliza Dushku, Amber Benson and Ernie Hudson. Lighting levels were very low, and we were kept back quite a bit so I couldn't really get the shots I wanted and could never get the shutter speeds I needed :( Had to resort to 1000 ISO, too. So even when I did get a reasonable image, it's still grainy.
23rd Sep 2004Gunthorpe
Gunthorpe is a quiet place, on the river Trent. It's where I first went fishing, and I've visited the riverside on a few occasions with some people who, in one way or another, mean a great deal to me .

It's also on my route to work. I drive over the bridge twice a day, without really giving it much thought or occasionally thinking "I must stop here with the camera one day". This evening, I stopped for 90 minutes or so and fired off some snaps. Just like it did in Sydney, the planet decided to throw me a sunset. Who am I to argue? :)

Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks like this- there was another photographer on the bridge...
12th Sep 2004See Red 2004
The See Red festival at Donington Park was a celebration of Ferrari- but there were some Maseratis, some vintage bikes, some ERA-engined cars, all sorts of things.

For me, the main event was the demonstration of four F1 cars; one an ex-Prost car, another ex-Alesi and two driven by some bloke called Schumacher...

The car park was fun, too. Like the point where I thought - "so what's that crowd looking at?"
The answer surprised me.
"I don't believe it. It's a ZONDA..."
25th Jul 2004MotoGP 2004
The World's eyes turn to Donington again. Valentino Rossi, Max Biaggi, Carlos Checa, Sete Gibernau... And of course Neil Hodgson, Shane Byrne, Jeremy McWilliams :)

Another nightmare getting out of the circuit: Donington - Mansfield via Leicester?!
17th Jul 2004RIAT Fairford Displays
The display teams- The Red Arrows, The Finnish Midnight Hawks, Patrouille de France and the Patrouille Suisse...

Thanks to Mark for the French/Swiss team names- should have thought to just visit the RIAT website!
17th Jul 2004RIAT Fairford
This was my first visit to an air show, and it's one of the biggest in the UK. Got a spot near the runway and started shooting. These are all shots of solo aircraft, there will be a separate collection for the display teams.

Thanks to MikeRocker from the LOMAC forums for pointing out it was an F15-C not F15-E as previously stated!
27th Jun 2004FIA GT 2004
Another trip to Donington - you must be getting bored of these by now, but I'm not ;)

This time it's the Ferrari 360 Modena Challenge, then the FIA GT cars- big, fast and very, VERY LOUD!
4th Jun 2004Motor Show 2004

Australia Reloaded
More of the 750 photos taken in Australia... I didn't take them all; the 'from the car' shots, and the bikini-clad ladies at Burleigh Head are all courtesy of Phil- as is the shot of me by the Opera House. Just to prove we really were there :)

Australia
A friend of mine has been working in Brisbane for most of the last year; before he came home I went out to see him...

We spent a week in Brisbane with a day on the Gold Coast- thanks to Bruce and Sian for being Satellite Navigation for the day :) Fish and chips on the coast is an English tradition, but it's never Pacific Dory and the coast never looks THAT good!

Second week was mostly taken up with a four-day trip to Sydney. 1000km (625 miles) each way. We got there in a day and a half, drove over the Harbour Bridge, used the Force to find a hotel that would let me park the car and saw (some) of the sights. As you can see, the sunset was good to us :) We drove back to Brisbane in one day. Next time, I'll fly.

Public thanks to Phil for inviting me over, and putting up with poor city driving from someone who *should* be better at it...
1st Jan 2004Banger Racing
A freezing New Year's Day at United Downs Raceway in St. Day, Cornwall. All of the classes were great entertainment, and just about as close to a track as I've ever been. It was a great opportunity, and I just wish I'd thought to check the spare battery was actually in the camera case...

The new monopod my parents bought me for Christmas worked a treat, as you can see :)

I'm running short of space, so this collection won't be around once I need to free up some quota.
9th Nov 2003Truck Racing @ Donington
Every year, the last meeting of the Donington season is the Trucks and Fireworks event. These are from 2003, I didn't go in '04.

The trucks were awesome, raw power, tyre and diesel smoke- I'll leave you to imagine the smell!

Fun watching the 2CVs racing. I don't think anyone used the brakes at all- the whole point is trying to keep momentum.

Fireworks
Some of these are hand-held shots (I know, I know...) taken from my back garden. Some are tripod-mounted at the Mansfield Town Football Club display. I got a good vantage point and some reasonable shots but I was a bit disappointed with the fireworks :(

Others were tripod-mounted from Rainworth (the orange-tinted ones) and Donington Park (the best exposures). The Donington ones are three-second exposures with auto-aperture. That seemed to work :)
28th Sep 2003Montgomery Castle
Montgomery Castle, commanding an 'obvious invasion route' between England and Wales. Honestly, that's what the sign said :)

The weather was great, but turned a little suspect just as we'd decided to go home. Thanks to Matt and Nikki for a great weekend and putting up with a mad photographer in the house!

21st Sep 2003Tollerton Open Day
8th Aug 2003Poppies
It's amazing what you can find by the side of the road...
13th Jul 2003MotoGP 2003
My first ever Motorbike meeting. Not happy with most of the 350+ photos I took and even some of these probably shouldn't be published. But who cares?

70,000 people were there in blistering heat and glorious sunshine. This is in the UK. Honest. It was hard work convincing the camera to try and autofocus past a chain-link fence out to the riders, but I think I got away with it :) And on some of them, I gave up and set a manual focus. Of course- then you have to press the shutter at the right time...

See if you can spot the manual focus ones!
25th May 2003Ferrari/Maserati Festival of Racing
Never seen so much expensive machinery in one place at one time...

This was the Ferrari & Maserati Festival of Racing, held at the Donington Park racing circuit in the United Kingdom
5th Apr 2003Memorabilia
The weird and wonderful world of Memorabilia. Everything from Aliens to Who. A sci-fi autograph hunter's dream, and a photographer's nightmare. Lots of big crowds around the more popular guests, but the real killer was the low light levels.

As a result, most of the indoor shots are shot at the equivalent of ISO800 film. It makes the images very grainy, I'm afraid.

This will be the collection for anything I shoot at a Mem event that isn't a famous face, or a member of the UK Garrison
